In 1971, protesters of the Vietnam War took shelter at Georgetown, leading to a stand-off among students, University administrators, and the government. The student body President and VP believed that the rights of students needed to be better provided for.
Incorporation was a viable means of doing just that. After a campus-wide debate, all undergrads were formally incorporated as “shareholders” in the non-profit Student Corporation. The goal of the corporation was to assert and protect the inherent rights of its members and the community and to use the power available to corporations, including making contracts, borrowing money, and receiving property. The Corp was, and continues to be, completely independent of Georgetown.

At its core, Shareholders’ Extravaganza is about thanking all of YOU, the Corp’s shareholders, for another year of successful service to one another. This November 4, the Corp will host a roundtable gathering of the leaders of prominent on-campus student groups to discuss important issues facing the student body. Shareholders’ Extravaganza will be a facet of an implementation strategy to ensure that this meeting leads to tangible impact on the Georgetown community.

The goal is to address the following questions:

1. How can all student groups work together to achieve common goals?
2. Does this collaboration help create positive change to campus?

All are welcome to sit in on the roundtable, listen to the discussion, and participate in a Q&A. Please join us Thursday, Nov. 4th at 6:30 pm in the Leavey Club Room.

E-mail Margaux McGrath, Corp Service and Outreach Chair, with questions, concerns, or suggestions at mcgrath@thecorp.org.

Dear Georgetown,

As you might have noticed recently, some of the Corp’s services have been unable to provide you with the products expected of them. MUG’s espresso machine spent most of the summer in the repair shop, only to break within a week of returning to action. That same day, Midnight MUG’s coffee brewer stopped functioning. Please know that we try our hardest to avoid these problems and work as fast as possible to have our services back up to full capacity. We realize that this is unacceptable, and we are committed to making sure similar gaps in service never disrupt our ability to provide you with the vital services and products for which you’ve begun counting on us. Towards that end, a brand new espresso machine arrived at MUG, and Midnight’s brewer is now ready for the mid-term library rush. Our machines are receiving regular maintenance, and we are focusing on purchasing top quality equipment to avoid these problems in the future. Finally, you may have heard some rumors about an “infestation” in Midnight Mug. The iterations of these rumors that I’ve hear are largely misinformed and exaggerated, and I can personally assure that we are proactively, relentlessly, and aggressively working with the University to ensure that the small issues we’re currently experience do not escalate into a larger problem. For the time being, I can further assure you that all products and services you receive from the Corp are entirely safe and in compliance with the District of Columbia’s Food Safety Code. As you may know, the Corp has worked hard in recent years to distinguish itself as Georgetown’s leader in food safety. We’ve scored higher than Wisemiller’s, Leo’s, Starbucks, and Cosi.

We all very much appreciate your understanding and patience on these several matters. The loyalty and support we receive from our fellow Hoyas is of the utmost importance to us. Thank you for your loyalty and patience. If you ever have further questions, feel free to reach out to me at coo@thecorp.org. Good luck surviving midterms, and stop by to check out our newest, shiniest pieces of equipment.

Thank you,

Josh Feller
Chief Operating Officer
Students of Georgetown, Inc.
