Philanthropy

Mission Statement

Philanthropy

The Corp Philanthropy Committee strives to engender a philanthropic spirit within the Georgetown community by supporting meaningful traditions and fostering original student service initiatives.

The Corp Philanthropy Committee aims to be a valuable philanthropic resource to all Georgetown University students by reinvesting profits into campus groups and service-related projects, thereby serving the community twice over.  In doing so, the CPC seeks both to give students the opportunity to develop and implement their own philanthropic initiatives, and to strengthen Georgetown traditions.  By supporting such innovation we encourage Georgetown students to make a lasting impact on the campus community, and to promote the ideals of ‘service’ and ‘giving back’.  Additionally, we seek to connect students with broader charitable interests, enabling those who wish to extend their philanthropic impact throughout Washington D.C. and beyond.  We support service in all its various forms, from events and groups, to starting conversations and raising awareness.

About

The Corp donated over $35,000 last year back to the Georgetown community through scholarships, event sponsorships, campus activism, and our “Re-Imagining Georgetown” grants in collaboration with The Hoya and the Credit Union. The Corp’s Philanthropy Committee is charged with evaluating funding proposals of up to $3000. Any Georgetown student or organization (including those not recognized by the university) can submit a funding proposal to The Corp.

The Corp has supported a variety of campus events over the past year, including material support for Hilltop Consultants’ Business Case Challenge Competition and STAND’s Darfur Conference and financial support for Hoyathon and the Gospel Choir’s spring concert. The Corp also underwrote the first annual Run for Rigby, 25 Days of Service, Harakat, and Relay for Life.

History

Fall Semester 2005 marked the inaugural term of The Corp Philanthropy Committee. Composed of representatives from each Corp service and chaired by an at-large Board member, the Philanthropy Committee established its mission of “building a culture of philanthropy and service within the company.” The Philanthropy Committee immediately began this by drawing upon The Corp’s financial and human resources to support worthy, student-directed causes in the Georgetown community. Notable financial donations include:

  • NHS Academic Council’s October Run for Relief for the Hurricane Katrina Fund
  • Gifts for the Hilltop Auction and Traditions Day
  • Transportation Costs for HOPE’s Help the Homeless Walkathon

The Philanthropy Committee is also responsible for organizing The Corp’s Charity of the Month program, which places donation boxes in Corp services to provide additional fundraising from Corp customers. Previous Charities of the Month include Hoyathon, Red Cross Hurricane Relief, and UNICEF.

Additionally, The Philanthropy Committee, led by member Margaret Lippitt, organized the first Corp-wide service project in November, bringing a busload of Corpies to HOPE’s Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall, raising hundreds of dollars in matched donations from the Fannie Mae Foundation.

Spring Semester 2006 has seen an expansion of the Philanthropy Committee’s reach in the Georgetown community. As of March 2006, the Philanthropy Committee has supported:

  • Black Theatre Ensemble’s production of “A Raisin in the Sun.”
  • The DC Schools Project’s Spelling Bee
  • Georgetown University Breast Cancer Outreach

The Philanthropy Committee has also organized Corp volunteers to staff this year’s Hoyathon dance marathon and will be partnering again with HOPE for this April’s Community Service Day.
