The Word. Scholarship

What is The Word Scholarship?

The concept behind it is simple. Each scholarship period, a panel of Corpies selects a word. The word could be anything, from charity or hope, to luck or freedom. When the Word. is announced, the application period has begun. The student is invited to submit a written piece of any form or length that he or she so chooses, with one stipulation: it must be significantly relevant to the chosen word. For instance, one could provide a business plan, a collection of poems or a one-act play. It could be fiction or non-fiction, a personal experience or completely made up. It could be anything as long as it pertains to the spirit of the chosen word.

Six $500 scholarships will be awarded.

This Year’s topic:

Last year it was the indescribable, this year it is umami. The fifth basic taste along with sweet, sour, salty, and bitter, umami is savory but subtle. Umami plays an integral role in making food mouth-watering. Although it is not easily recognizable, when blended with the others, it completes the sensation.

Tell us in 300 words what umami means to you. Fill out the application by February 15th. Be insightful, creative and concise. The top six will each receive a $500 scholarship.

How do I apply?

The application process is very simple. To apply, send your written piece as an email attachment to philanthropy@thecorp.org. Included with the document should be a one-page cover sheet, separate from the actual written piece, which includes the following information:

  • Name
  • Contact Email
  • Phone Number
  • Local Address
  • Class Year
  • School

Applications without the cover sheet will NOT BE ACCEPTED.

PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ON THE ACTUAL PIECE; THE PURPOSE OF THE COVER SHEET BEING SEPARATE IS TO KEEP THE SUBMISSION REVIEW PROCESS AS OBJECTIVE AS POSSIBLE.

How will the entries be judged?

All pieces will be reviewed by a panel of members of the Corp Board with the following criteria:

  • Thoughtfulness
  • Relevancy to chosen word
  • Degree that ideas are expressed

Applicant winners will be notified within two weeks of end of application period.

Please Note: Unless otherwise explicitly expressed on the cover sheet. The Students of Georgetown, Inc. reserves the right to publish, advertise or display students’ entries in any manner deemed fitting.
